Recommended bike helmets, by Consumer Reports

“Whether you’re heading out for a long ride or just tooling around town, if you are going to ride a bicycle, it is essential that you wear a bike helmet,” says Consumer Reports.

“Helmet use has been estimated to reduce the odds of head injury by 50 percent, and the odds of head, face, or neck injury by 33 percent.” When choosing a model, you should consider factors such as fit, comfort and durability. And the helmet “should be replaced every five years, or sooner if it is damaged.”

Here is the Consumer Reports’ selection of recommended bike helmets. The maximum overall score is 100, and “Best Buy” models offer more value.
